CLOTHING GUIDANCE
Clothing that is trendy will date a portrait and make it something you might not enjoy after a few years. Large patterns or graphics on clothing will draw more attention to the clothes than to you. John’s recommendation is to wear solid coloured, non-trendy clothing or clothing without wide stripes.
When creating a successful family or group portrait, the efforts in achieving harmony in clothing will pay dividends in the quality of the finished portraits.
For group portraits keep the tonal range (lightness or darkness) consistent throughout the group or family. Pick a theme colour and keep everyone in shades of that colour. Choose either medium to light tones or medium to dark tones for all the people in the group. If you have five people wearing dark colours and one person dressed in white or a light colour, guess who will stand out in the portrait ? It's also important to try to achieve colour harmony in the portrait. The same rule applies to choice of colours. If everyone is in cool colours and one person is in red, again they get all the visual attention.
The best choices for colours are neutral to cool colours - blues, greens, and purples - and to try to avoid warm colours such as reds, oranges, yellows.
A group dressed in formal clothes with one person in blue jeans may not be successful, also one person wearing a short sleeve top will standout in a group of people wearing long sleeves. Short sleeves take the attention away from the face.
These are just guidelines, please feel free to discuss your clothing ideas with us, and choose the background colour for the portrait.
